Business activity in several streets within Nairobi's central business district faced major disruption on Tuesday morning after police clashed with hundreds of protesters demanding justice for slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.

The demonstrators, waving placards and national flags, streamed into the CBD under the watch of heavily deployed police officers.

The procession remained peaceful until it reached Kimathi Street near the Nation Media offices, where the protesters paused for prayers.

Tensions rose sharply when police fired teargas at the crowd without warning, sending people scattering through the streets. Some regrouped and marched towards the Central Police Station while singing freedom songs in memory of Ojwang.

Shops and offices along Kimathi Street, Moi Avenue, and surrounding areas were either closed or operating cautiously due to the unrest and heavy police presence. Many workers and shoppers stayed away, with commuters reporting that the CBD remained on high alert.

Security has also been tightened on roads leading into the city, including Mombasa Road, Thika Superhighway, and Jogoo Road. Anti-riot police, regular officers, and plainclothes security personnel have been stationed at strategic points as tension continues to build.

Crowds begun forming on Mombasa Road as more protesters attempt to reach the city centre. However, some participants on social media have raised alarm that individuals posing as protesters were trying to infiltrate the march and cause chaos.

Pedestrians and commuters are being forced to use alternative routes as the situation remains tense and unpredictable.
